HOW IT WORKS
Apply: Submissions are now closed
Selection: Four writers will be chosen to take part in this six-month mentorship.
Mentor pairing: Each mentee will be matched with an industry professional selected by BBC Writers.
Regular meetings: You’ll meet online with your mentor throughout the six months for one-to-one guidance and feedback.
Ongoing support: You’ll receive additional support from BBC Writers and UKMF to help you get the most out of your mentorship – including resources, advice, and structured guidance.
Development: Your mentor will help you strengthen your writing, explore your voice, and understand pathways into the TV and film industry.
Final showcase: The programme will conclude with an industry showcase event, bringing together mentees, mentors, and professionals to celebrate your work.
Deadline: Submissions will be accepted until the 31st of October, though the application window may close early if we receive a high volume of entries.
GUIDANCE
You do not need to submit the first 20 pages of your script, as long as your synopsis provides enough context to introduce the story and characters.
When selecting your sample, please keep the following criteria in mind:
Character and Dialogue
Your characters should feel real and purposeful – even within 20 pages. Dialogue should be sharp, engaging, and reveal character through subtext rather than exposition.
Voice and Style
We’re looking for a distinct writing voice. What makes your perspective or approach different from others? Is your dialogue snappy and clever? Are your descriptions cinematic and vivid? Is your humour original and fresh?
Proof of Concept
Your sample should hint at the potential for a larger story. Those 20 pages should make the reader eager to see what happens next – giving a sense of the wider world and character journeys still to come.
